Tour de France 2025 Stage 5 arrives in Caen for a 33-kilometre individual time trial on Wednesday, 9 July. With only 200 metres of elevation, the flat course is tailor-made for the discipline’s elite. All eyes are on Remco Evenepoel, the reigning world and Olympic time trial champion, as he eyes a stage win—and possibly the yellow jersey.
The ITT begins and ends in Caen, a city celebrating its 1000th anniversary this year. Known as “The City of a Hundred Bells,” Caen hasn’t hosted the Tour de France since 2006, when Oscar Freire sprinted to victory.
Today’s test against the clock is fast, wide and largely uninterrupted. With time checks at kilometres 8.2, 16.4, and 24.8, it will be a perfect battleground for powerhouses like Evenepoel, Wout van Aert, and Jonas Vingegaard to gain serious time in the GC standings.
Stage 4 delivered another dramatic finale. Tadej Pogacar outkicked Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Vingegaard on the Rampe Saint-Hillaire in Rouen, taking his first stage win of the Tour. Van der Poel, however, retained the yellow jersey by finishing in the same time as Pogacar.
GC after Stage 4:
Remco Evenepoel is the man to beat. He has dominated time trials this season, with wins at the Tour de Romandie, Critérium du Dauphiné, and the Belgian National Championships.
Wout van Aert, known for his TT prowess, is still looking for a major time trial win this year. Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic are also expected to feature prominently.
Unfortunately, Filippo Ganna—a top favourite for this route—was forced to abandon the Tour in Stage 1.
