Thursday Night Darts Masters: Wright Won’t Be Right

Two Value Bets for Opening Night at The Masters.

Two Value Bets for Opening Night at The Masters.

The PDC World Masters, better known as The Masters, kicks off tonight in Milton Keynes. The tournament will conclude on Saturday night with the semifinals and final. Stephen Bunting is the defending champion and started the year in style by winning the Bahrain Darts Masters.

Bunting is in action tonight, but with odds of just 1.10 against the relatively unknown William Borland, there’s little value in backing him. Instead, we’ve found two better betting opportunities for the opening round.

Peter Wright vs. Kevin Doets – 22:00 GMT

Masters

Peter Wright is far from the sharp darts player he once was. The two-time world champion has been a shadow of himself for over a year, yet he still claims he belongs among the elite. The veteran is capable of brilliance—like when he eliminated Luke Humphries at the World Championship—but can also perform so poorly that an average pub player might look like a pro in comparison.

On the other hand, Kevin Doets is on the rise. Last weekend at the Dutch Darts Masters, he demolished Nathan Aspinall 6-1 before narrowly losing 5-6 to Gerwyn Price. He also made waves at the World Championship, where he eliminated Michael Smith. I believe he’s more than capable of troubling Peter Wright tonight.

Danny Noppert vs. Michael Smith – 23:30 GMT

Masters

The night closes with what can only be described as a top-tier clash. Dutchman Danny Noppert had little to offer against a red-hot Gerwyn Price at the Dutch Darts Masters, where Price averaged 101.85. Noppert himself had a respectable 93.72 average, but it simply wasn’t enough. At the World Championship, he suffered an early exit to Ryan Joyce, despite having a higher average than his opponent.

Michael Smith has spent the first month of 2025 recovering from his disappointing World Championship exit to Kevin Doets—a match he controlled for long stretches. Smith also had a poor second half of 2024, but reminded us of his quality by winning the World Cup of Darts alongside Luke Humphries. The former world champion is a slight favorite against Noppert, and I expect him to get his revenge tonight.

  • Bet: Michael Smith to win
  • Odds: 1.85
  • Stake: 3 units
