Which Tottenham Will Show Up This Weekend?
The history between Tottenham and Liverpool promises goals, and plenty of them. An incredible 19 of their last 25 meetings have seen both teams find the net, with the last three games alone producing 16 goals. As we approach this weekend's clash, fans are bracing for yet another thrilling showdown. Tottenham, boasting the second-best home goal tally in the league (only behind Brentford), face Liverpool, who lead the way for away goals this season. Predicting a winner is much tougher, especially with Tottenham’s unpredictability in full display.
Tottenham sit a modest 10th in the table, and their inconsistency is as evident as ever. They’ve celebrated huge victories like a 4-0 thrashing of City, a 3-0 win over United, and a dominant 4-1 against Aston Villa. Yet, they’ve also dropped points against newly promoted Leicester and Ipswich. Manager Ange Postecoglou continues to deliver entertainment, but the fans’ patience wavers as they yearn for a steadier ship.
Postecoglou himself acknowledges the challenge of managing at this level:
“This is probably one of the toughest jobs you can have, maybe even harder than being a prime minister. A prime minister faces elections every four years; I face them every weekend,” said the Greek-Australian manager, now on his 11th managerial stint.
While Premier League glory seems out of reach this season, Tottenham fans still dream of lifting their first major trophy since 2008. Thursday’s League Cup clash against Manchester United saw Postecoglou field a near full-strength squad, and Spurs fought off a late scare to secure a semifinal berth against, of all teams, Liverpool.
Postecoglou reflects on the importance of silverware:
“If I look at the atmosphere since I arrived, it feels like winning a trophy could transform everything. But for me, it’s about building a sustainable, competitive club. One cup doesn’t mean we’ve made it, but maybe I’m wrong. Maybe that’s exactly what we need.”
Liverpool approach this game with mixed form, drawing their last two games against Newcastle and Fulham. Despite these setbacks, they remain the only Premier League team unbeaten away from home (5-2-0). Mohamed Salah has been sensational, contributing to 71% of Liverpool’s goals this season (13 goals, 9 assists). Diogo Jota, with 99 career league goals, could hit a century on Sunday. However, defensive frailties persist, especially with Ibrahima Konaté still sidelined.
Tottenham’s last two home games have featured an astonishing 14 goals, and their meetings with Liverpool rarely disappoint. While over 2.5 or even 3.5 goals may seem like safe bets, Tottenham’s unpredictability offers value for a home win at odds of 4.20. If Fraser Forster has a stronger showing, Spurs might just overcome their dismal record against Liverpool.
