Preview: Everton vs. Tottenham

A crucial clash between two struggling teams

David Moyes is back at the helm of Everton, 23 years after he first took charge. The Scottish manager received a warm welcome at Goodison Park as he led his side in his second stint as boss. Unfortunately, his comeback ended in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this week. Everton have managed just 17 points from 20 Premier League games this season, leaving Moyes with the tough task of securing the club’s top-flight status before they move into their new stadium this summer. Confidence is in short supply, particularly in attack, where goals have been hard to come by and chances even harder to create.

Missing the spark

Despite the loss to Villa, Moyes remains optimistic about the commitment shown by his players.

“I’ve seen enough to know these players are ready for the challenge. They’ve been fantastic in training, and I think they’re a great group of lads. However, we’re missing that extra spark to give us the boost we need,” Moyes said after the game against a Villa side that had lost its previous five away matches.

That spark seems absent in Everton’s current squad, and it appears likely that reinforcements will arrive before the January transfer window closes.

“The fans want reinforcements, and they see the same things I do. We need fresh ideas, particularly from players who can create offensively, and I’m both hopeful and confident we’ll get some deals done during the window,” Moyes added.

Tough times for Tottenham

While Everton have recently made a managerial change, Tottenham may not be far from doing the same. Spurs have won just one of their last nine league matches, with that lone victory coming against struggling Southampton. Wednesday’s derby against Arsenal ended in a disappointing 2-1 loss, despite Spurs taking an unlikely lead.

Injuries have decimated Tottenham’s squad, forcing young players like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Djed Spence to take on far greater responsibilities than planned. Manager Ange Postecoglou has faced a tough challenge with so many key players sidelined but has also come under criticism for rushing injured players back into action. His demanding style of play hasn’t helped mitigate the injury crisis either.

What’s at stake

Everton have won just three of their 20 league games this season and are deeply embroiled in a relegation battle. Only Southampton have scored fewer goals than Everton, who also struggle to create chances. While there were some encouraging signs against Villa, the team once again failed to score. Moyes will be without Armando Broja, who is out for several months, while James Garner and Dwight McNeil are nearing a return but are unlikely to feature on Sunday.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have won just one of their last nine Premier League games and are missing several players, including Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, and Rodrigo Bentancur. However, Spurs have dominated this fixture in recent years, going unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Everton, including a 4-0 win in August.

Everton haven’t beaten Tottenham in a long time, but this could be their chance. Spurs looked alarmingly poor against Arsenal, and their lengthy injury list only makes the task harder.
