Crucial Bottom-of-the-Table Clash
Wolves are without a win in their first ten matches and have conceded the most goals in the league. In last round's 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, Wolves fans made it clear they'd had enough. “You don't know what you're doing,” echoed from the stands after Gary O'Neil made some unpopular substitutions. There's little doubt that the 41-year-old needs three points against Southampton to survive the international break.
Jørgen Strand Larsen has delivered since arriving in Wolves' city this summer, standing with four goals and an assist. Against Palace, he was unfortunately involved in the first goal conceded but made amends by equalizing to 1-1. However, the goals mean little when victory is absent.
“I believe we were the better team, and it really hurts to be standing here with just one point. I think we all deserve more, especially the fans who show up. It's the fans I feel most for, to be honest—it was a fantastic atmosphere at the stadium. There were some good positive moments, but it's not enough,” Strand Larsen told the local newspaper Express & Star.
Southampton had eight losses and only one point from their first nine games after their promotion, but on Saturday, Saints fans finally got what they'd been waiting for. Adam Armstrong was the sole scorer in the bottom clash against Everton, allowing them to escape the bottom position. However, there is no reason to declare Southampton fully recovered. A mere seven goals scored in ten games highlights their issues, and many still believe that Russell Martin's squad isn't strong enough to play his ambitious style, building from the back.
“We’ve won a football match, but we’re not there yet. We always want to take steps forward, and we believe we’ve taken important ones. We performed against Manchester City and got the reward against Everton. I hope this gives the players a confirmation to keep believing in what we're doing,” said the Saints boss to local press.
The Wolves have won their last five Premier League matches against Southampton and have only lost one of their last 14 meetings. However, Wolves have now gone 22 consecutive league games without a clean sheet, and their 2-1 victory against Luton in April is their only win in the last 20 Premier League matches. Yerson Mosquera, Enso Gonzalez, Sasa Kalajdzic, and Boubacar Traore are unavailable for Saturday’s game.
Last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Everton was Southampton's first three points in 22 Premier League matches and also the first time in 21 games that they avoided conceding. They have lost all their last eight away games in the top division. Ryan Fraser, Gavin Bazunu, Ross Stewart, and Will Smallbone are injured and unavailable for the Wolves game, but Adam Lallana is reportedly ready.
It would be surprising to see many goals at Molineux on Saturday, so under 2.5 goals might be the choice for many. However, we’re going with a straight home win, as we think Wolves have made strides in the right direction in terms of play, even though it hasn’t yet translated into points.
