Liverpool never reached their best form in last weekend’s big Premier League match against Arsenal, but goals from Van Dijk and Salah still secured a point. Two goals conceded there, and two more in their own net against Brighton on Wednesday. Progress in the League Cup was nonetheless secured through what was only the second win in their last six meetings with The Seagulls.
Brighton took full points against both Tottenham and Newcastle, before squandering points at home to Wolves last weekend – leading 2-0 with two minutes left of regular time. Three goals conceded against Liverpool midweek, but in terms of gameplay, a depleted Brighton side matched their opponent. The conceded goals were cheap and came from defensive mistakes.
Twelve of the first matches in all competitions under Arne Slot have been won, with the only defeat coming at home to Nottingham Forest in September. Harvey Elliott, Alisson, Federico Chiesa, and Diogo Jota are injured and unavailable for Saturday’s match. Caoimhin Kelleher will replace Alisson, and the Irish keeper has only lost one of his first Premier League games, which came against none other than Brighton.
Brighton, like Liverpool, have only lost one match in the Premier League this season. That defeat was a 2-4 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. No fewer than nine different Brighton players have scored league goals this season, and Danny Welbeck has found the net in each of his last three matches. Team captain Lewis Dunk has missed the last two games and remains doubtful today.
Matches between Liverpool and Brighton often see plenty of goals, as evidenced by the 3-2 result in the Reds’ favor in Wednesday’s League Cup match. We expect more goals this afternoon and suggest betting on over 2.5 goals.
