Nations League: England vs Greece

Group leaders Greece visit England at Wembley

England is aiming for a third consecutive win under the leadership of Lee Carsley as they face Greece at Wembley tonight. The visitors currently top Nations League Group B2, but a home win would see England take the top spot.

Only first place is good enough

Lee Carsley is a strong candidate to take over the national team permanently after Gareth Southgate, but to do so, the winning streak needs to continue. The former Irish international saw goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish secure victory against Ireland in his debut, followed by another 2-0 win against Finland in Harry Kane's 100th game, which was, of course, crowned with a goal. Two wins from two, but they are still behind tonight's visitors due to goal difference. A second-place finish in the group would lead to promotion playoffs, but only winning the group will likely be enough for Carsley to secure the manager's role permanently.

Most successful

England – Greece: Fotis Ioannidis

Not only does Greece lead the group, but after consecutive wins to start the campaign, they are also the nation with the most victories in Nations League history. Newly promoted to League 2, and with a combined score of 5-0 against Finland and Ireland, Greece has impressively shown they can handle this level without difficulty. The win over Ireland was their 14th overall Nations League victory. Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ioannidis has scored three of Greece's five goals in Group B2, with only Slovenia's Benjamin Sesko (four) having more goals in the entire 2024-25 Nations League.

Kane will have to wait

England – Greece; Harry Kane

Koobi Mainoo, Ezri Konsa, and Morgan Gibbs-White are among those ruled out due to injuries, and Harry Kane is also struggling with minor issues. The Bayern striker will not start tonight, making room for either Ollie Watkins or Dominic Solanke in the starting lineup.

Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer are all back after missing the last game for various reasons, while Tino Livramento and Curtis Jones are set to make their debuts after being called up urgently this week.

Greece also has injury concerns, with top scorer Ioannidis forced to withdraw. Even without Ioannidis, Greece has offensive potential with players like Pavlidis and Tasos Bakasetas, but the absence of their top scorer will be felt.

England – Greece, Wembley Stadium

Carsley could become the first England manager to win his first three games without conceding a goal and the first to win his first three games overall since Fabio Capello in 2008. Greece has failed to score in seven of their last nine games against England, and since their Euro 2004 triumph, they have gone 12 straight games without a win against top 5 ranked nations.

We predict an England win and bet on a home victory with a -1 handicap.
