The Oslo derby between Vålerenga and Lyn is act two of the season’s major highlights in the OBOS-liga.
Perhaps, when Vålerenga looks back at the catastrophic relegation in 2023, it won’t seem so catastrophic after all. We all know how beneficial it appeared to be for Brann when they were relegated to the second tier, quickly re-establishing themselves at the top after their comeback to the Eliteserien. Naturally, Vålerenga hopes to replicate the success of the Bergen team, and for us neutrals, it’s great to have the biggest derby in the capital in the OBOS-liga.
This means we’re reunited with one of the most intense rivalries in Norwegian football, and unquestionably the biggest in the capital. The derbies between Vålerenga and Lyn always deliver spectacular drama and entertainment on the pitch, and in the stands, an atmosphere only rivaled by the matches between Vålerenga and Lillestrøm. On Saturday, it’s time for act two of the OBOS-liga’s major highlight this year, as the arch-rivals clash at Intility.
The first match of the season was played in front of a sold-out Ullevaal, and there won’t be an empty seat at Vålerenga’s home ground when kickoff happens at 6:00 PM on Saturday. The hosts already seem to have one foot in the Eliteserien, having shown terrifying form after a rocky start to the season. The lead over the closest promotion competitors is now seven points, while Lyn, for their part, has done an impressive job of being among the challengers for a playoff spot after their promotion from the PostNord-liga.
After Saturday’s derby, there will still be ten games remaining in the league season, but if all three points stay at Intility, a VIF promotion will feel almost inevitable. However, a home loss would reignite the excitement in the battle for the top spots, while Lyn could move into a playoff position. So, there’s a lot at stake, and Muamer Brajanac enters his first Oslo derby full of confidence. The Vålerenga striker arrived in the capital from Danish football this summer, and in his fifth game for the club last round, against Levanger, he recorded his first hat-trick in Norwegian football.
“With three goals, you could say I’m coming in with a lot of confidence, especially against Lyn. We know it’s going to be a different kind of game; derbies have a life of their own. It’s something I’m really looking forward to,” Brajanac told the club’s website.
