15 years and 34 matches since the last goalless North London derby
Since 2009, every match between the arch-rivals Tottenham and Arsenal has delivered goals, and the excitement hasn’t diminished with Tottenham’s appointment of Ange Postecoglou. Last season, the fixture ended 2-2 when Arsenal hosted, while at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, The Gunners were up 3-0 just over half an hour into the match. Arsenal won, but two goals from Spurs helped them save face, at least partially. Nevertheless, the result meant Tottenham has only picked up one point from the last twelve possible against their rivals. Not good enough for Spurs fans, who are likely also unhappy with what they’ve seen in the season’s first three matches.
Missed Chances
Tottenham has earned four points from three opening games. The team stopped playing football after one half against newly promoted Leicester, ending 1-1 in the season opener at King Power Stadium. A routine victory against Everton followed, but in the 1-2 loss to Newcastle, they wasted several opportunities. The stats told a clear story, as Tottenham had 66% possession and dominated shots 20-9.
“We’ve played three good games without getting the results. We need to learn to finish games when we have the chance,” summarized the Spurs boss to the English press after the 1-2 defeat at St. James’ Park.
Arsenal Test
Martin Ødegaard left the international match against Austria on crutches and is expected to miss this weekend’s North London derby from the sidelines. This spells serious trouble for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, who are already without Declan Rice. The latter saw red in the 1-1 home draw against Brighton in the last match before the international break, meaning he too will miss Sunday’s game. Arsenal’s two most important players are (most likely) absent, and Arteta has no one who can step in to replace the work they do. Both are key players in both offense and defense, and are also clear leaders on the pitch.
Crucial Encounters
Injuries and suspensions rarely come at the right time, and this time, they hit Arsenal at one of the worst possible moments. In the Premier League, back-to-back away matches against Tottenham and Manchester City await—two games that could be crucial for their title hopes. This is especially true after the previous round’s 1-1 home draw against Brighton. Between the Spurs and City games, they will also face Atalanta in the Champions League, and their captain is unlikely to feature in any of these major clashes – though Mikel Arteta has been surprisingly optimistic about Ødegaard’s chances ahead of Sunday’s battle.
Good News
There’s been a lot of negativity in the Arsenal camp ahead of this weekend’s London battle, but there’s also been some positive news in recent days. The biggest and most important is that Mikel Arteta has signed a new long-term contract.
“I’m very proud and excited, and I look forward to what lies ahead in the coming seasons. The club is like a big family, and we’re all pulling in the same direction. I have no desire to be anywhere else,” says Arteta, who has been Arsenal’s manager since 2019.
Tottenham vs Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sunday 3:00 PM
The home team has now lost six of their last ten Premier League matches. Against Arsenal, they’ve only won one of the last seven, and in the last three, they’ve contributed with own goals. Son Heung-min has scored two goals in the first three matches, and with another goal on Sunday, he will break into the top 20 all-time Premier League scorers – with a total of 123 goals. Last season, the South Korean scored three goals in two matches against Arsenal. Richarlison, and most likely Yves Bissouma, will miss Sunday’s game. However, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke are said to be fit again from knee and ankle injuries, respectively.
Arsenal has won nine and not lost any of their last ten away Premier League games. In eight of those ten, they’ve also kept a clean sheet. They had eight straight wins before the 1-1 draw with Brighton. Kai Havertz looked like a flop after his first few weeks at Arsenal, but no. In 2024, the 25-year-old German has contributed 18 goal involvements from 21 games – eleven goals and seven assists recorded by the former Chelsea player. Speaking of former Chelsea players, Raheem Sterling is set to make his debut for the visitors. Declan Rice is suspended, Mikel Merino is out with a shoulder injury, Riccardo Calafiori is doubtful, and it would be surprising if Martin Ødegaard is ready after the sprained ankle he suffered against Austria.
