Friday Night football from The Championship
After just four league rounds, the Championship season was interrupted for international matches. Sunderland was the only club to go into the break with a perfect score, while Friday's two opponents stand with three and six points, respectively. We take a look at the teams' season start and offer betting tips.
Newcomers on Hold
Both Hull and Sheffield made changes to their squads this summer. Former HSV boss Tim Walter took over Hull on July 1st from Liam Rosenior, and the German has brought in plenty of new players since his arrival. The latest addition came this week when former Brighton player Steven Alzate accepted a two-year contract with the Tigers. However, the midfielder will not be seen tonight.
“Steven is a fantastic football player who will benefit us, but he is not match-fit and will need a few weeks before he's ready to contribute,” Walter told the club's website.
Trying Again
Sheffield United was a punching bag in the Premier League, setting numerous negative records before their 1-5 loss to Newcastle in April confirmed their relegation to the Championship. Chris Wilder has been given another chance as manager, but the squad has seen a makeover during the summer. Ten new players, including Jamie Shackleton, Sam McCallum, Kieffer Moore, Callum O’Hare, Tyrese Campbell, and Michael Cooper, have been brought in, while 15 players, including Ollie McBurnie, Cameron Archer, William Osula, Jayden Bogle, and Wes Foderingham, have left.
A direct return to the Premier League is the obvious season goal, and The Blades remain unbeaten after four league rounds. In the League Cup, the club is already finished—beating Wrexham but exiting after a 0-1 loss to Barnsley.
Hull – Sheffield United
MKM Stadium, Friday 21:00
Odds from Norsk Tipping: 3.40 – 3.25 – 2.15
Hull was under heavy pressure from Leeds from the first whistle in the last match before the international break, but still managed to keep a clean sheet for over an hour at Elland Road. Liam Millar and Chris Bedia each recorded major chances but without any results. The Tigers started the season with three consecutive draws and are still looking for their first win of the season. Most concerning for Walter is the lack of goals. Only two goals have been scored, one of them coming from a stoppage-time penalty. Only 8 wins from 23 home games last season.
Sheffield United remains unbeaten, though they have only won two of their first four matches. Both wins came at home at Bramall Lane, where an early own goal proved decisive in a tight and even battle against Watford in the last match before the break. The win was deserved, as Kieffer Moore both missed a penalty and wasted another huge scoring chance. Sheffield United started the season with a two-point deduction, so sixth place after four rounds is quite acceptable. A win on Friday will move The Blades up to 2nd place in the table before the rest of the round is played on Saturday.
Hull still hasn’t won, despite being favorites in all of their first three matches of the season. The lack of goals is a concern, but the hope is that the newly arrived duo of Kasey Palmer and Abu Kamara (both arriving on Deadline Day) can help turn things around. Sheffield United has delivered and is a clear promotion candidate. Chris Wilder's side is naturally the betting favorite, and we trust them at decent odds.
We bet on an away win at odds of 2.15, while there's also value in betting on over 9.5 corners (odds of 1.65). All eight of Hull and Sheffield United's matches this season have included over 8 corners, and six of the eight have had over 10 corner kicks.
