Milan has had a rough start to their Champions League campaign with consecutive losses to both Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen. Nothing less than three points will suffice tonight to keep their hopes alive for qualifying for the knockout stages without having to go through the playoff route. After a weak start to the season, it seems the Milan side is starting to find their footing under their new coach, Paulo Fonseca.
The Portuguese arrived in Milan as recently as this summer, but already early in the season, rumors about his departure began to swirl. Not all Milan supporters were pleased with the appointment of the former Roma and Lille coach, but the last month has been a solid upturn. Four of the last five Serie A matches have ended in victory, including a memorable 2-1 win in the Derby della Madonnina against archrivals Inter a few weeks ago.
Now the floodlights will once again shine on the pitch at the mighty San Siro as Club Brugge comes to visit, and the Belgians have actually had a better start to their Champions League campaign than tonight’s hosts. Admittedly, they suffered a convincing 0-3 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the opener, but followed it up with a fine 1-0 triumph away against Sturm Graz. Hugo Vetlesen has taken on a central role in this Brugge team, led by Nicky Haien, and has experienced figures like Simon Mignolet and Hans Vanaken at his disposal. Andreas Skov Olsen is the club’s top scorer with four goals this fall, but the Dane has gone five consecutive matches without scoring for both club and national team.
Milan is under great pressure to secure three points tonight after losing their first two Champions League matches. The pressure is significantly less on the visiting Club Brugge, and we believe they are capable of getting a result here tonight. Therefore, cautious bets are placed on a draw and 1-1.
