Tottenham’s weakest start since 2008
Tottenham’s weakest start since 2008
Three losses and a modest ninth place after seven league rounds mark Tottenham's weakest start since 2008. Despite this, under the leadership of Big Ange, Spurs continue to play high-tempo, attacking football, as seen in their recent match at Brighton. Leading 2-0 at halftime, instead of defending their lead, they pushed for more goals in the second half. It ended, as it often does for Spurs, in a 2-3 defeat.
A big bright spot for Tottenham has been Brennan Johnson, who managed just five goals in his first 38 appearances after joining from Forest. After scoring again against Brighton, the winger has now found the net in each of his last six games for Spurs. Things would look very different for Spurs if Timo Werner were as clinical. The German has immense pace and creates many chances, but in front of goal, the former Chelsea player has struggled. This weekend, Werner might be back on the bench as both Heung-Min Son and Richarlison are expected to return from injury.

The managerial change and significant squad overhaul at West Ham haven’t gone entirely smoothly. The 4-1 win against Ipswich in their last match before the break did improve their outlook, but there's still a lot for Julen Lopetegui to work on. After all, Ipswich's defense looked disorganized at London Stadium. Adding to the mix is that their much-anticipated summer signing, striker Niclas Füllkrug, has yet to make a significant impact.
He has only played just over an hour since his move from Dortmund, and he won't be available for this weekend's clash either. However, Füllkrug is Lopetegui’s only absentee. A win in this weekend's London derby would see West Ham leapfrog their rivals in the table. Although West Ham has lost four of their last six away matches against Tottenham, they are unbeaten in their last three London derbies on the road.
Tottenham – West Ham
Saturday, 12.30
Tottenham doesn't hold back offensively, but they also struggle to keep things tight at the back. Meanwhile, West Ham has kept just one clean sheet in their last 25 Premier League matches. This clash has all the makings of a high-scoring affair, so we’re betting on over 2.5 goals.
