Betting Tip: Plymouth vs Luton

Friday night Championship opener

Six rounds of the Championship are completed, and now it’s time for a double round. There is already a 15-point gap between the top and bottom of the table, with both of tonight’s contenders, Plymouth and Luton, sitting in the lower half. Plymouth was expected to be here, while Luton is one of the pre-season favorites for promotion. Rob Edwards’ team had a slow start but has now strung together consecutive wins. Plymouth will likely rely heavily on home performances to gather most of their points, while Luton will have to dig deep to secure a third consecutive win.

Plymouth – Luton
Home Park, Friday 21:00

Plymouth suffered a heavy defeat in their season opener, but Rooney’s side has been steadily improving since. They defeated then-league leaders Sunderland 3-2 at Home Park, followed by a narrow loss to current Championship leaders West Bromwich away last weekend. Plymouth had more possession than WBA on Saturday and matched them in the number of shots. However, the Green Army has been struggling to find the back of the net. Aside from the Sunderland match, they haven’t scored more than one goal in any game, remaining goalless against both Stoke and West Bromwich. With no new injury concerns, Plymouth is expected to field the same starting XI as they did against WBA.

Promotion hopefuls Luton had a poor start with just one point from their first four games, but they’ve since found their footing. Teden Mengi scored the winning goal away at Millwall, and two goals from Carlton Morris last Saturday turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday at Kenilworth Road. Like Plymouth, Luton has been struggling to score, netting just five goals in their first six matches. After coming off the bench and scoring two goals last weekend, Carlton Morris is expected to be rewarded with a starting spot tonight. This will be their first match against Plymouth since the 2018-2019 League One season, when Luton won 5-1 at home, and the return match at Home Park ended 0-0.

Betting Tip

Plymouth Argyle has made significant progress since their 0-4 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the season opener, but so has Luton. Both teams share the common problem of struggling to score, and the home side will likely take a cautious approach against one of the promotion favorites. Our pick for tonight’s bet is under 2.5 goals.
